About Course

Autism Awareness in Early Years is a beginner-friendly training course designed for nursery practitioners, preschool staff, childminders, teaching assistants, early years educators and students.

This course provides a practical introduction to autism, helping learners understand how autism may present in young children and how to provide inclusive, supportive practice within early years settings.

During this course you will learn:

• What autism is and how it affects children’s development.

• The early signs and characteristics of autism.

• Common myths and facts about autism.

• Practical strategies to support autistic children in everyday practice.

• Effective communication approaches.

• Creating autism-friendly environments.

• Working in partnership with parents, carers and professionals.

• Promoting inclusion and meeting children’s individual needs in line with the EYFS.

This is a beginner-level course and no previous knowledge of autism is required.

At the end of the course, learners will complete a final assessment and receive a Certificate of Completion.

UNDERSTANDING AUTISM
This module introduces autism and explains how it may affect children in early years settings. Learners will develop an understanding of autism as a lifelong neurodevelopmental difference, explore the concept of neurodiversity, recognise common misconceptions, and begin to identify practical ways to support autistic children through inclusive practice.

Communication and Interaction
Communication is an essential part of every child's development, but autistic children may communicate in different ways. This module explores how communication and social interaction can vary, practical strategies to support children's understanding and expression, and how early years practitioners can create communication-friendly environments. Learners will develop confidence in using inclusive communication approaches that support every child's participation, learning and wellbeing.

Sensory Processing
Sensory processing plays an important role in how children experience and respond to the world around them. Some autistic children may be more sensitive or less sensitive to sights, sounds, smells, tastes, touch or movement. This module explores sensory processing differences, how they can affect learning and behaviour, and practical strategies for creating sensory-friendly early years environments. Learners will develop confidence in recognising sensory needs and making simple adjustments that support children's wellbeing, participation and learning.

Supporting Behaviour
Behaviour is a form of communication, particularly for autistic children who may find it difficult to express their thoughts, feelings or needs using words. This module explores why behaviours occur, how to identify possible triggers, and practical strategies to support positive behaviour in early years settings. Learners will gain the knowledge and confidence to respond calmly, reduce anxiety, and create an inclusive environment where every child feels safe, understood and supported.
